Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Hexanoic acid, 3,5,5-trimethyl-, tin (2+)salt (2:1) undergoes dissociation in contact with water :
a. Sn (II) will be oxidized to insoluble Sn (IV)O2: determination of log Kow not required
b. 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid: log Kow=2.83 at pH 2.8 and 25°C; log D value of 0.65 (25°C and pH 7). The log Kow of 2.83 at pH 2.8 is considered appropriate as worst case for chemical safety assessment.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
2.83
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

The test substance hexanoic acid, 3,5,5-trimethyl-, tin (2+)salt (2:1) represents a salt which in contact with water undergoes dissociation. In the presence of oxygen, the Sn (II) component will be oxidized to insoluble Sn (IV)O2. According to REACH regulation (Annex VII, column 2), the log Kow does not need to be determined if the substance is inorganic. The calculation of the n-octanol/water partition coefficient for the 3,5,5 -trimethylhexanoic acid component via ACD/Labs v.12.01 yielded a log Kow value of 2.83 (at pH 2.8, 25°C) and a log D value of 0.65 (25°C and pH 7). Therefore, the substance will have a low potential for adsorption to organic matter of soils and sediments and for bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms at environmental relevant pH values.
