Description of key information

Anthraquinone was tested for the assessment of skin irritation/corrosion effects using:
- New Zealand Albino rabbit (EU Method B.4 Acute Toxicity: Dermal Irritation/Corrosion): negative results
- human epidermal model EpiDerm(TM): negative results
Anthraquinone was tested for the assessment of eye irritation/corrosion effects using:
- New Zealand Albino rabbit (EU Method B.5 Acute Toxicity: Eye Irritation/Corrosion): negative results
- human corneal model EpiOcular(TM): negative results
All tests were performed in accordance with GLP principles.

Additional information

With respect to skin and eye irritation, studies performed according to current standards were available. After application of the substance on the skin of rabbit, no evidence of a corrosive effect or symptoms of irritation were observed. The substance placed in the conjunctival sac of eye of rabbit caused redness of conjunctiva. This affection faded away through 48 hours and irritation was due to mechanical action of powder rather than to toxic effect. The substance, Anthraquinone, is not irritating to skin or eyes.

Based on studies on skin and eye irritation, Anthraquinone is considered non-corrosive.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the test results and according to the EC criteria for classification and labelling requirements for dangerous substances and mixtures the test substance Anthraquinone does not have to be classified for skin irritation and has no obligatory labelling requirement for skin irritation.
