Toxic effects of bis(2 -ethylhexyl)amine (CAS 106-20-7) to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria were studied in a guideline test (German Industrial Standard DIN 38412, part 9) using Desmodesmus subspicatus as test species (BASF AG, 1990; report no. 2/d500/89). No solvent was used in this study; the test concentrations were not analytically verified. The study was re-evaluated using ToxRatPro v2.09 to obtain effect values based on growth rate from the fluorometric raw data. The study meets the current validity criteria of OECD 201. The following effect values were calculated: 72-hour ErC50 = 1.55 mg/L (nominal) and 72 -h ErC10 = 0.14 mg/L (nominal).

Supporting information on the toxicity to algae are available from a static non-GLP growth inhibition screening test performed following to a modified protocol of OECD 201 (reduced number of replicates, higher spacing factor, no concentration control analysis), using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as test species. The screening test was conducted in order to evaluate the potential for toxicity mitigation by natural organic carbon simulated with humic acid. One experiment was performed without addition of humic acid, while two others were performed with addition of humic acid (Na salt) at concentrations of 3 and 10 mg/L. In absence of humic acid, a 72-h ErC50 of 0.38 mg/L was determined while in the experiment with addition of 3 mg/L humic acid, the ErC50 was 0.47 mg/L and in the experiment with 10 mg/L the EC50 was 0.39 mg/L, indicating that the addition of 3 mg/L and 10 mg/L humic acid had no mitigating effect algal growth toxicity (BASF SE, 2016; report no.: 86E0454/11E201). However, due to considerable restrictions (e.g. no analytical test item concentration verification; test concentration spacing factor exceeds the maximum value recommended by the guideline; minimum number of recommended test concentrations not reached), the study is disregarded in terms of chemical safety assessment.

In conclusion, the substance is assessed to be acutely toxic to algae.
