Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.16 (Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test is conducted to provide preliminary information on the auto-flammability of solid substances at elevated temperatures.

The relative self-ignition temperature test for solids is performed in a temperature programmed oven of approximately 2 litres volume with natural air circulation. A stainless steel wire mesh, 20 mm test cube with 0.045 mm openings is filled with the test sample. The cube is then gently tapped and refilled until completely full. The sample temperature is monitored by a thermocouple placed in the centre of the test cube. Another thermocouple is placed between the test cube and the oven wall to monitor oven temperature. The temperature of the oven and the sample are continuously recorded while the temperature of the oven is increased to 400°C or to the melting point of the solid, if lower, at a rate of 0.5°C/min.

The temperature of the oven at which the sample temperature reaches 400°C by self-heating is called the self-ignition temperature.

Apparatus: 2 litre temperature programmed oven with natural air circulation 20 mm cube constructed of stainless steel wire mesh with 0.045 mm openings and 2 calibrated K type thermocouples.

The test is conducted in accordance with the procedure described in EU Regulation (EC) 440/2008, Annex Part A test A.16.

Results and discussion

Relative self-ignition temperature (solids)
Key result
Remarks on result:
no self ignition observed under the test conditions

Any other information on results incl. tables

Three endothermic events were observed. The first endothermic event was observed with an approximate onset temperature of 42°C. The second endothermic event was observed with an approximate onset temperature of 76°C and the third with an onset temperature of approximately 229°C. However, no self-ignition was observed. On completion of testing, no sample remained apart from some residues.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
No self ignition of SMLT was observed under the conditions of the test
Executive summary:

A determination of the relative self-ignition temperature of SMLT was conducted in accordance with the procedure described in EU Regulation (EC) 440/2008, Annex Part A test A.16.

Three endothermic events were observed. The first endothermic event was observed with an approximate onset temperature of 42°C. The second endothermic event was observed with an approximate onset temperature of 76°C and the third with an onset temperature of approximately 229°C. However, no self-ignition of SMLT was observed.
