Description of key information

Metal carboxylates such as fatty acids, C6-19-branched, calcium salts are substances consisting of a metal cation and a carboxylic acid anion.

Based on the solubility of fatty acids, C6-19-branched, calcium salts in water, degradation in the environment is most accurately evaluated by separately assessing the fate of its constituents calcium ions and C6-19-branched fatty acid ions (or rather its structural analogue neodecanoate).

Abiotic degradation is not relevant for calcium ions. Neodecanoate anions have potential for an indirect photochemical degradation but this process appears to be negligible. Furthermore, a direct photochemical degradation is unlikely since neodecanoic acid does not absorb light within a range of 290 to 750 nm. In addition, calcium cations and neodecanoate are not subject to hydrolyzation as both ions lack hydrolysable groups. Therefore, abiotic degradation is not considered to significantly affect the fate of fatty acids, C6-19-branched, calcium salts in the environment.
