Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
partition coefficient
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
25 February 2015 - 26 February 2015
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 117 (Partition Coefficient (n-octanol / water), HPLC Method)
Version / remarks:
2004
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
Standards were injected separately instead of simultaneously.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.8 (Partition Coefficient)
Version / remarks:
2008
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
Standards were injected separately instead of simultaneously.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
HPLC method
Partition coefficient type:
octanol-water
Analytical method:
high-performance liquid chromatography
Key result
Type:
log Pow
Partition coefficient:
>= 4.6 - <= 4.78
Temp.:
22.3 °C
pH:
>= 5 - <= 9
Remarks on result:
other: The pH was not reported, however it is assumed to be within the range relevant for the natural environment, i.e. in the pH range of 5.0 to 9, according to OECD guideline 117.
Details on results:
Three chromatographic resolved test item components were observed with an area of 29.2%, 10.5% and 60.4%, corresponding to mean log Pow values of 4.60, 4.67 and 4.78, respectively. A weighted average of the three components is reported as the log Pow value for farnesol.

All of the following validity criteria were met:
- The signal-to-noise ratio for the reference items and test items were > 3.
- The value of log Pow derived from repeated measurements made under identical conditions and using the same set of reference items fell within a range of +/- 0.1 log units.
- The correlation coefficient r for the calibration curves was > 0.9.
- The column temperature during measurement was maintained at 20 to 25 +/- 1 C and did not vary by more than 1 C.
Conclusions:
The log Pow for farnesol was determined to be between 4.60 and 4.78 at 22.3°C, as determined by HPLC.
Executive summary:

The log Pow was determined to be between 4.60 and 4.78 at 22.3°C, as determined by HPLC of three chromatographically resolved test item components. This study is considered to be reliable without restriction (Klimisch 1) as it was conducted according to OECD 117 and EU A.8 and was GLP-compliant.

Description of key information

The log Pow range from 4.60 to 4.78 (weighted average 4.72) at 22.3°C, as determined by HPLC.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
