Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Parent compound:

Results of a study on the effect of DIBIS (CAS 106 -75 -2) on Pseudomonas putida test are only available as secondary source in the review of BUA (1991). The original reference is not available; therefore, no details on the study are available. The following effect values were reported:

- 17-h EC10 = 69 mg/L (non-neutralised)

- 17 -h EC10 = 8070 mg/L (neutralised)

The study covers effects from the hydrolysis products diethylene glycol and HCl based on the long exposure duration and the short hydrolysis half-life of DIBIS (see IUCLID Ch. 4.7).

Hydrolysis product:

Diethylene glycol (DEG; CAS 111 -46 -6):

The effect of DEG on the respiration activity of activated sludge fro a wastewater treatment platn treating predominantly domestic sewage was investigated in two guideline studies. Klecka et al. (1985) determined a 3 -h EC50 of > 1000 mg/L in a study following OECD TG 209. In a study following ISO 8192, which is equivalent to OECD 209, a 30 -min EC20 > 1995 mg/L as determined (BASF AG, 1982).

Bringmann and Kühn (1977) studied the effect of DEG on the growth of Pseudomonas putida. They determined a 16 -h EC0 of 8000 mg/L.

It can be concluded that the inhibition of the degradation activity is not anticipated when the substance is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
