- Concentrations: The control and loading rates of 15, 30, 45, 67 and 100 mg/L were analysed analytically.
- Sampling method: Duplicate samples without algae were taken from each loading rate and the control at the start of the test. At the end of the test (after 72 h), samples (containing algae) were taken in duplicate from all loading rates and from the control. For sampling from the aged test media, the contents of the respective replicates were combined prior to sampling.

PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF TEST SOLUTION (especially for difficult test substances)
- Method: Water Accommodated Fractions (WAFs) were prepared individually. The test item was mixed into test water by intensive stirring for 96 h in closed vessels in the dark to dissolve the different components of the test item as far as possible within a reasonable time period. After stirring, the emulsions were filtered through a 0.45 μm membrane filter (Whatman, NC45). As a pre-caution, the filter was pre-conditioned with 200 mL filtrates to avoid losses of dissolved test item due to adsorption on the filter material. The undiluted filtrates were tested as WAFs.

- Observation of abnormalities (for algal test): The microscopic examination of the algal cells at the end of the test showed no difference between the algae growing at the loading rate of 100 mg/L and the algal cells in the control. The shape and size of the algal cells were obviously not affected by the test item up to at least this test concentration.

For the determination of the LOEL and NOEL, the average growth rate and yield at the test concentrations were compared to the control values by the Williams t-test. Statistical analysis was performed using ToxRat Professional®.

Conclusions:
The 72-hour EL10 and EL50 values for the inhibition of growth rate were found to be >100 mg/L. All effect values were based on the nominal loading rate.

Additional information

One experimental study is available investigating the toxicity of the test item to aquatic algae. The impact of the test item on the growth of the freshwater green algal species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was investigated in a 72-hour test according to OECD 201 (2011) under GLP conditions. Since the test item is a complex mixture (UVCB) consists of several constituents with differently low solubilities, Water Accommodated Fractions (WAFs) with the loading rates of 15, 30, 45, 67 and 100 mg/L were tested to assess the toxicity of the test item to algae. Additionally, a control group (test water without test item) was tested in parallel. The actual test concentrations were verified by GC/FID measurement at the start and end of the test. At the start of the test, the measured concentrations of the analyzed components of the test item in the test media were 0.36, 0.69, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.0 mg/L, respectively. At the three highest loading rates (45, 67 and 100 mg/L), the analyzed test item concentrations were in the same range of 1.0 to 1.2 mg/L, showing a plateau and demonstrating that the maximum concentration (sum of peaks) of dissolved test item was reached under the conditions of the test. The measured concentrations at the end of the test were in the range of 18 and 39 % of the initially measured values. Inhibition of growth rate was only 8.2 % at the highest loading rate of 100 mg/L resulting in an 72-hour ErL10/50 of >100 mg/L. Since WAFs were tested all reported biological results were based on the loading rates of the test item. The preparation of the WAFs and procedure of evaluation of data of WAFs is based on recommendations of the OECD Guidance Document No. 23 on Aquatic Toxicity Testing of Difficult Substances and Mixtures, 2000.
