The available literature on the aqueous solubility of inorganic nickel compounds has been reviewed (Carlsen, 2001). In the solid form, NiCl2 exists as the anhydrous or the hexahydrate salt. In saturated solutions of NiCl2 the number of water molecules attached to the salt will vary with the temperature (Carlsen, 2001).

 

The salt is very soluble in water a priori, it could have been expected that the presence of different amounts of crystal water might dramatically affect the solubility. However, in the case of nickel chloride it appears that independently of the number of water molecules attached as crystal water, the compound is readily soluble in water.

 

Maximilien states that NiCl2 is very soluble in water and in all biological fluids. The solubility is given as 240 g/L as nickel at (Maximilien, 1989) in excellent agreement with the above figures (Carlsen, 2001).
