Description of key information

1. In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation 1907/2006/EC Annex VII section 8.1 in-vitro studies for skin corrosion and skin irritation do not need to be conducted if the available information indicates that the criteria are met for classification as corrosive to the skin or the substance is flammable in air at room temperature. n-Butyllithium is pyrophoric and would react violently upon contact with water or air humidity, releasing flammable butane and corrosive lithium hydroxide, and likely starting a fire. For classification, the results of CORROSITEX assays with Lithium hydroxide anhydrous and Lithium hydroxide monohydrate were considered for the skin irritation classsification.
2. In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation 1907/2006/EC Annex VII section 8.2 an in-vitro study for eye irritation do not need to be conducted if the available information indicates that the criteria are met for classification as corrosive to the skin or irritating to eyes or the substance is flammable in air at room temperature. n-Butyl lithium is pyrophoric and would react violently upon contact with water or air humidity, releasing flammable butane and corrosive lithium hydroxide. n-Butyl lithium is regarded as skin corrosive (Cat. 1B (H314) according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) and Corrosive R34 according to Directive 67/548/EEC). Therefore the eye irritation study has been waived due to animal welfare reasons.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data, n-Butyl lithium is classified as corrosive (C, R34: corrosive; causes burns) according to Directive 67/548/EC (DSD) and as severely skin damaging cat. 1B (H314: causes severe skin burns and eye damaging) according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP).
