In accordance with REACH Annex VII column 2, the hydrolysis study does not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable.

Malic acid is stable in water and will not hydrolyse or otherwise degrade to form hazardous or non-biodegradable metabolites

Read across to fumaric acid is considered valid as the metabolic route for fumaric acid is through malic acid. Therefore, to achieve biodegradation in excess of 60% implies that malic acid is also readily biodegradable.  Fumaric acid is less water soluble and also requires one further metabolic step than malic acid; it is likely that malic acid biodegrades faster.

Modelling with EPISuite confirms high biodegradation for this class of natural substance.
