Summary of degradation

Potassium zirconium carbonate (KZC) is inorganic and hence the ready biodegradation and hydrolysis tests are not relevant and technically not feasible. This is because there is no carbon to be evolved and no chemical bonds to be broken, respectively. The water solubility of potassium zirconium carbonate is822.69 ± 1.71 g/L at 23 ºC (Hasemann, 2012). 

Volatilisation

In an OECD TG 104 test the vapour pressure of potassium zirconium carbonate was determined to be

2.6 x 10-2Pa at 20 ºC,

4.3 x 10-2Pa at 25 ºC and

4.2 x 10-1Pa at 50 ºC.

Distribution modelling

No distribution modelling data exist. Modelling is not relevant to this inorganic substance.

Summary of environmental distribution

Kd values for Zirconium (Zr) are presented in a published IAEA report (Technical Reports Series No. 472, 2010). The Kd values for loam/clay and organic soil (organic matter content > 20%) ranged between 3700 and 5000 L/kg. Therefore the geomean value of 4301 l/kg was used for the PNEC calculations.

 

Summary and discussion of bioaccumulation

No experimental data on bioaccumulation exist. The data are not required as the hazard assessment performed during the chemical safety assessment concludes that the substance is of no immediate concern to the environment. The available data are adequate for classification and labelling purposes. Since KZC is an inorganic substance a PBT assessment is not required.

Secondary poisoning

Bioaccumulation of KZC is not expected to occur. Hence no secondary poisoning risk exists.
