In order to assess the aquatic toxicity and to classify the substance 4 -tert-Butylbezonitrile a study according to OECD Guideline 202 ("Daphnia sp., Acute Immobilisation Test") was performed.

According to the results of the test, the EC50 (48 h) for immobilisation was determined to be 4.10 mg/L (nominal) and 3.64 mg/L (actual) of test item. The corresponding NOEC (48 h) was 1.88 mg/L (nominal) and 1.73 mg/L (actual) of 4-tert-Butylbenzonitrile.

Based on the available ecotoxicological information and a log Kow of <4 the substance 4 -tert-Butylbenzonitrile does not need to be classified as dangerous to the environment.
