Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The test substance concentration used in the ready biodegradability test of 100 mg/L is a NOEC, since the substance at 100mg/L did not inhibit the degradation activity of the activated sludge (as shown by the 99% degradation of the susbtance within 14 days).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
100 mg/L

Additional information

Based on the Biodegradation and Bioaccumulation Data of Existing Chemicals Based on the CSCL Japan (Japan Chemical Industry Ecology -Toxicology and Information Center, 1992) biodegradability as a measure of BOD, TOC and test substance concentration of dimethyl isophthalate (DMIP) has been adequately characterized (Vertellus Performance Materials Inc.).  Biodegradability of DMIP based on indirect analysis of BOD was 99% after two weeks. Direct analysis by HPLC and TOC measurement confirmed biodegradability over the two week study period to be 100% and 96%, respectively. The DMIP concentration used in the activated sludge study of 100 mg/L is a NOEC since DMIP at 100 mg/L did not inhibit the degradation activity of the activated sludge (as shown by the 99% degradation of DMIP within 14 days).
