Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The biodegradation of Fatty acids, C16 -18, 2 -butyloctyl esters was 72.8% within 28 days (after acidification) in an OECD 301B-test.  The test item reached the criterion of ready biodegradation (> 60 % after 28 days).

Therefore the substance is not considered to be persistent (P).

The target substance comprises of two main constituents. Both constituents show no tendency to be bioaccumulative. The worst case approach is to use the data of Fatty acid, C16, 2 -butyloctylester.

Fatty acid, C18, 2 -butyloctylester:

Estimated Log BCF from regression-based method = 0.91 (BCF = 8.127 L/kg wet-wt)

Estimated Log BCF from Arnot-Gobas method (upper trophic) = -0.047 (BCF = 0.8971)

Estimated Log BAF from Arnot-Gobas method (upper trophic) = 0.997 (BAF = 9.935)

Fatty acid, C16, 2 -butyloctylester:

Estimated Log BCF from regression-based method = 1.391 (BCF = 24.62 L/kg wet-wt)

Estimated Log BCF from Arnot-Gobas method (upper trophic) = -0.038 (BCF = 0.9158)

Estimated Log BAF from Arnot-Gobas method (upper trophic) = 1.478 (BAF = 30.03)

Therefore the substance is not considered to be bioaccumulative (B).

Based on the available data on acute aquatic toxicity (algae, daphnia, fresh/salt water fish) on the test substance and similar substances, Fatty acids, C16 -18, 2 -butyloctyl esters can be assumed to exhibit no aquatic toxicity in the range of its water solubility. Toxicity Aquatic toxicity tests do not indicate the substance meets the criteria to be regarded as toxic (T). Furthermore Fatty acids, C16 -18, 2 -butyloctyl esters is not classified as carcinogenic, germ cell mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction or STOT.

Hence the substance does not meet the criteria to be regarded as a PBT or vPvB substance.

An emission characterisation for Fatty acids, C16 -18, 2 -butyloctyl esters is not needed because it is not a PBT.
