Additional information

Testing of toxicity to other aquatic organisms is not required under Annex VIII. CAS# 297730-93-9 will not remain in aqueous systems and therefore no exposure to organisms is expected. The primary fate of CAS# 297730-93-9 is expected to be photolysis to HF, TFA, and PFBA. These acids are highly soluble and are expected to reside ultimately in the aquatic compartment. HF and TFA are subjects of existing risk assessments. Two studies of PFBA toxicity to freshwater organisms not otherwise categorized were conducted. One rangefinding study each was conducted for green frog (Rana clamitans) at tadpole stage and the freshwater mussel Elliptio complanata at adult stage. 96-hour LC50’s were >10,000 mg/L and 4815 mg/L, respectively, and 96-hour NOECs were 10,000 mg/L and 1000 mg/L, respectively. These studies were generally in accord with test guidelines, and the Elliptio complanata study had analytical support for the nominal concentrations used. However, neither study was in accord with GLP criteria and, as rangefinding studies, both had a factor of ten difference in concentrations. These are nevertheless considered reliable with restrictions. The studies provide further evidence supporting the conclusion that PFBA is not acutely toxic to aquatic organisms according to GHS criteria.
