Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Hydrolysis product propanol (71-23-8): With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic algae

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Parent compound propyl chloroformate (CAS 109-61-5):

No data available. However, as the dissolved substance is expected to rapidly hydrolyse in contact with water (t1/2 < 1 h), available data of the hydrolysis product propanol are used to assess the aquatic toxicity of the chloroformate to aquatic algae.

Hydrolysis product propanol (CAS 71-23-8):

The toxicity of propanol to aquatic algae was studied in a 96 h growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly: Selenastrum capricornutum) (Slooff et al., 1989). The 96 h EC50 was determined to be > 2000 mg/L (nominal, not analytically verified).

Based on these result, propanol is considered to be acutely not harmful to aquatic algae.
