Appearance/physical state/colour

White phosphorus is described as a colourless to white, transparent, crystalline solid; it can also described as a yellow wax like solid. The substance is sometimes called yellow phosphorus; the yellow colour is due to the presence of impurities. There are two allotropic forms: alpha, forms cubic crystals and exists at room temperature; beta, forms hexagonal crystals.

Melting point

The melting point of the substance is 44.1 °C.

Boiling point

The boiling point of the substance is 280 °C.

Density

The density of the substance is 1.83 g/cm³ for the alpha form and 1.88 g/cm³ for the beta form.

Vapour pressure

The vapour pressure of the substance is 0.026 mmHg at 20 °C, and 0.181 mmHg at 44.1 °C (melting point).

Water solubility

The solubility of the substance in water is reported to be 0.33 mg/100 g water (3.3 mg/L) at 15 °C, and one part per 300,000 parts water.

Auto flammability

The auto ignition temperature of the test substance is 30 °C.
