Principles of method if other than guideline:
Germination tests were carried out for a period of 3 days with Lactuca sativa L. cv. Great Lakes fruits on agar at 30 °C in plastic containers sealed with snap-on lids. Inhibitory activity was expressed as the mol/m³ concentration of the compound producing 50 % inhibition at the given temperature.

Any other information on results incl. tables

To use this result for the derivation of the PNECsoil, the EC50 -value has to be related to mg/kg soil dw. Since the amount of agar in the test was with 0.5% negligiable, the EC50 of 462.66 mg/L was related to mg/kg water and multiplicated with the factor of 1.5 (standard soil density) to get mg/kg soil dw.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

Acute toxicity to the commonly used lettuce Lactuca sativa was investigated in a non-GLP non-guideline approach by Reynolds (1989), Seed germination and root elongation were measured using an agar plate on which the plant was sowed. After 3 days an EC50 of 693.99 mg/kg soil dw was estimated for the endpoint germination related to the nominal concentration.
