Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The two lowest reliable aquatic plants other than algae study for freshwater Physcomitrella patens which are reported by Zarini, S., D. Annoni, and O. Ravera, 1993 after a 22-days exposure to aluminium sulphate was 171070 mg/l (EC50).
This information will be take into account for toxicity to aquatic plants other than algae for the derivation of PNEC.

The available data for saltwater aquatic plants other than algae are limited and to obtaine the value for PNECs for saltwaters is taken account a assesment factor 10 to extrapolate to EC50 following the “Guidance on Information Requirement and Chemical Safety Assessment R.10: Characterisation of dose [concentration]- response for environment”and “Table R.10-5 Assessment factors proposed for deriving PNEC water for saltwater for different data sets”, to account for the possibility that greater taxonomic diversity in the marine environment makes it likely that some marine taxa may be more sensitive than the most sensitive freshwater taxa.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater plants:
171 070 mg/L
EC50 for marine water plants:
17 107 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater plants:
34 214 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for marine water plants:
1 711 mg/L

Additional information

Under the conditions of the study of Zarini, S., D. Annoni, and O. Ravera, 1993 and aquatic test № 171799

aluminium sulphate did not cause either biochemistry effects or physiological toxicity, on freshwater Physcomitrella patens

below  34214mg/l (NOEC). The two EC50 was 171070 mg/l. (See attached document-AQUATIC TEST №: 171799)

Under the conditions of the study of Morgan, E.L., Y.C.A. Wu, and R.C. Young 1990  aluminium sulphate did not cause either biochemistry effects or physiological toxicity, on freshwater Physcomitrella patens below 34214mg/l (NOEC). The two EC50 was 171070 mg/l.
