Justification:

Aluminium sulphate will rapidly dissolve and dissociate in water, because of its high water solubility and non- volatility.

When released into water, the aluminum sulphate hydrolyses to form aluminum hydroxides.

For inorganic metal salts the concept of biodegradation is not applicable in general (OECD, 2001). Removal of aluminum from solution via precipitation and abiotic processes is dominant. Aluminum is abundant in the environment from natural mineral sources.

 Bioaccumulation and secondary poisoning are not considered significant. Aluminum is not expected to bioaccumulate in organisms and food chains.

Aluminum compounds are non hazardous (not classified for the environment). Aluminum (Al) is the most commonly occurring metallic element, comprising eight percent of the earth's crust and is therefore found in great abundance in both the terrestrial and sediment environments. Concentrations of 3-8% (30,000-80,000 ppm) are not uncommon.

The relative contributions of anthropogenic aluminum to the existing natural pools of aluminum in soils and sediments is very small, and therefore, not relevant either in terms of added amounts or in terms of toxicity.Aluminum sulphate is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction nor is there any evidence of chronic toxicity according to Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

 

 Aluminium sulphate does not fulfil the criteria for persistency, bioaccumulation and toxicity as laid down in the TGD (EC, 2003). Therefore, this substance is not consideredon PBT or vPvBsubstance.
