Description of key information

Research has been performed on a number of chromium salts.

Chromium occurs naturally in water and is not considered to be accumulative and will biotransform into alternative organic and inorganic salts, although will remain as Cr 3+.

Algae appear to be the most sensitive organism for short term exposure (significant inhibition at 1.38 mg/l for the hydroxynitrate), but fish NOEC is reported to be 0.15 mg/l for chronic exposure (equivalent to 0.69 mg/l for the substance with nominal molecular weight of 240).

The UK Environment Agency has proposed a maximum limit and this is used to determine the PNEC Aquatic of 47 µg/l for Cr III.

 

Although chromium salts are potentially inhibitory to algal growth in laboratory tests, under alkaline environmental conditions the solubility of Cr3 + is typically less than 1 mg/l and will very likely precipitate as carbonate or hydroxide and not cause adverse effects.

 

However, in view of chronic toxicity data on early life stage of fish, Aquatic Chronic 3 is proposed as a classification based on the fact that chromium III is an essential element and considered non-accumulative
