Endpoint:
viscosity
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2000-2012
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: non GLP study following internal SOP; endpoint regularly checked by internal Quality Control Laboratory of the submitting company
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: internal SOP (Literatur reference: [1] Viskositätsmessungen mit Brookfield, Ausgabe 9/99; [2] Brookfiled DV-II Pro, Manual Nr. M/03-165)
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Test Guideline 114 (Viscosity of Liquids)
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
PRINCIPLE:
The method is applicable for liquids having a viscosity between 1.5 mPa.s and 600'000 mPa.s. The possible range of measurement is 15°C-90°C. The recommended apparatus is a Brookfield-Digitalviscosimeter Model LVTDV-II. The principle of the measurement is to rotate a spindle in a liquid test item and to measure the corresponding torsional moment.

INSTRUMENTS/APPARATUS:
- Viscosimeter BROOKFIELD Model DV-II (LVTDV-II)
- Fitting BROOKFIELD SC-4 Small sample Adapter
- Sample device 13R from Brookfield
- Lab-Thermostat: KS Lauda regulated, accuracy: 0.1°C (filled with E-Water)
- Spindle: SC-18 (for viscosity measurements < 10’000 mPa.s) or SC-34 (for viscosity measurements > 10’000 mPa.s)
- Temperature measuring instrument: EBRO TFN 1093

SAMPLE PREPARATION & MEASUREMENT:
The thermostat is set to the desired temperature. It is recommended to start the analysis with spindle No. 18 first. The measuring device is filled with approx. 6 ml test item for analyses with spindle no.18 or 10 ml for measurements with spindle no. 34. It might be necessary to adjust the niveau of test item in the measuring device up to 1 cm below the margin. The spindle is connected with the rotator of the viscosimeter and the measuring cell thermostated for 15 minutes. After that, measurements can be started. It is recommended to select the rotation speed in the way, that the spring torsion is between 10 and 90%. The analysis can be stopped as soon as the value is constant. For viscosities > 10'000 mPa.s, the analysis should be repeated with spindle no. 34.after having a constant. If the rotation speed is changed during analysis, it is recommended to wait for another five minutes until the the value is constant.

GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
rotational viscometer (dynamic)
Temp.:
20°C
Parameter:
dynamic viscosity (in mPa s)
Value:
1.696
Conclusions:
The dynamic viscosity was determined to be 1.696 mPa.s at 20°C.
Executive summary:

The dynamic viscosity was measured with a rotational viscosimeter, obtaining a result of 1.696 mPa.s at 20°C.
