Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
October 1994
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
slightly different test results
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test methods are described in another document. This does not impair the conclusion of the test results.
The principles of the test methods including their deviations to the guideline are described in detail in the field "any other information on materials and methods".
GLP compliance:
not specified
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

1) 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance. Only short spark formation occurs. (“Bewertungszahl” BWZ 2).

2) 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited by an open gas flame held onto the substance for approx. 10-15 seconds. (“Bewertungszahl” BWZ 1).

3. 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited by putting into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds. In a mixture with potassium nitrate the same reaction could be observed ("Bewertungszahl" BWZ 1).

Even substances rated with BWZ2 are not considered to cause a propagating fire after ignition.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
3,4-Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited in any of the three tests similar to EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids)). Therefore 3,4-Dichlorobenzonitrile is considered to be non flammable.
Executive summary:

The tests were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline A.10.

3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile was dried before testing. The dried 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the substance. Only short spark formation occurs.

In a second test 3,4 -dichlorobenzonitrile was put into a flat iron bowl and heated with an open gas flame burner for 10-15 seconds. 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited.

In a third test 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile and a 1:1 mixture of 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile with potassium nitrate was put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds. Both, the substance and the 1:1 mixture with potassium nitrate could not be ignited.

Because 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited in any of the three tests it is considered to be non flammable.

Description of key information

3,4-Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited. Therefore 3,4-Dichlorobenzonitrile is considered to be non flammable.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to this test results 3,4 -Dichlorobenzonitrile can be excluded from the hazard class "flammable solids" and does not need to be classified.
