Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on a structural assessment and DSC scan the explosive properties of Methacrylonitrile have been predicted negative.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

The explosive properties of methacrylonitrile were assessed using the testing strategy of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria.

The first step in the testing strategy was an assessment of the screening procedures for substances which may have explosive properties

(Appendix 6 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria; Screening Procedures).

The test items structure was assessed for groups that would imply explosive properties. There are no such groups present, therefore the result for explosive properties can be predicted negative.

Based on the screening procedures no further testing is required if there are no chemical groups present associated with explosive properties, according to Appendix 6 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria.

However, a differential scanning calorimetry scan was performed to provide further evidence that the substance does not have explosive properties. There were no signs of exothermic decomposition during the scan and therefore no evidence to imply explosive properties.

Based on a structural assessment and DSC scan the explosive properties of Methacrylonitrile have been predicted negative.

No additional testing (test methods following the testing strategy of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria) is required.

Disregarded studies:

The literature data providing estimates of explosion limits have been disregarded for the assessment of the substances explosive properties. This data presents the estimated explosion limits of the substance when in vapour/air mixtures, and does not evaluate the substances intrinsic explosive properties. This data cannot be used in the assessment of explosive classification according to CLP

(Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) and has therefore been disregarded.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test substance does not meet criteria for classification as an explosive substance under CLP (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) based on the screening procedures.

Based on a structural assessment and DSC scan the explosive properties of Methacrylonitrile have been predicted negative.
