With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms. The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

This aquatic toxicity assessment was based on the following data:

Short-term toxicity to fish:

The acute toxicity of the structurally related molecule Sucrose, propoxylated (CAS 9049-71-2) to fish (Danio rerio) was tested in a study equivalent to OECD 203 in which a LC50 (96h) value of 6310 mg/L was determined. This result is considered to be adaptable for the test substance due to the structural similarities and the identical core-molecule (Diethylene glycol) of both substances.  

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

Acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was tested using a static approach in a GLP test according to OECD guideline 202 (BASF SE 11012601G202, 2011). After 48 hours of exposure of the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna an EC50 > 100 mg/L was found, related to the analytically verified nominal concentration. The NOEC was determined to be 100 mg/L (highest concentration).  

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

No data on the chronic toxicity of the test substance on aquatic invertebrates are available. However, the chronic toxicity of the structurally related substance D-Glucitol (Sorbitol), propoxylated (CAS 52625-13-5) was investigated in an OECD 211 guideline study. In this study, the NOEC (21d) on the mortality of Daphnia magna was determined to be 10 mg/L (Bayer 1357 A/05 D, 2005) related to the endpoint mortality. As the endpoint is not based on reproduction the NOEC is not considered for PNEC derivation. This result is considered to be adaptable for the test substance due to the structural similarities of both molecules.

Toxicity to aquatic algae:

The toxicity of the structurally related molecule Sucrose, propoxylated (CAS 9049-71-2) has been tested in a GLP guideline study according to EU Method C.3 using Desmodesmus subspicatus as a test organism. In this limit test no effects were observable and the NOEC and the EC0 (biomass and growth rate) values were determined to be greater than 100 mg/L. This result is considered to be adaptable for the test substance due to the structural similarities and the identical core-molecule (Diethylene glycol) of both substances.  

Toxicity to microorganisms:

As key study concerning acute toxicity to microorganisms a test performed by BASF SE (08G0043/11G004, 2011) according to OECD guideline 209 was identified, using domestic activated sludge as inoculum. In the static test an EC10 of 540 mg/L for the respiration inhibition after 180 minutes of exposure was calculated related to the nominal concentration.
