Description of key information

Acute toxicity to aquatic organisms was not experimentally determined for DTPA-FeK, but there are available data from studies on the source substances: DTPA-FeHNa, EDTA-Fe and other DTPA’s salts as well.

Acute toxicity to fish

The acute toxicity to fish (Danio renio) acc. to Guideline 203 was experimentally determined for chelate DTPA-FeHNa: The results indicate no effects on mortality or behaviour at an analytically confirmed concentration of 100 mg/L.

Acute toxicity to invertebrates

The 24h LC50 of DTPA to Daphnia carinata was 342.9 mg/l, with the lower and upper 95% fiducial limits being 168.5 and 678.6 mg/l, respectively. There was no mortality after 48 h of exposure to 200 mg/l DTPA, however exposure to 400 and 800 mg/l both resulted in 100% mortality. Consequently, the 48h LC50 was calculated as the geometric mean of the highest and lowest DTPA concen trations giving 0 and 100% mortality, respectively, with the two concentrations in question being the 95% confidence limits. Therefore, the 48-h LC50 of DTPA to Daphnia carinata was 245.0 mg/l (95% confidence limits; 200, 400).

Acute toxicity to algae

An Algal Growth Inhibition test in accordance with OECD test guidelines 201 and with the OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice was conducted for DTPA-FeHNa and P. subcapitata. The nominal concentrations of 1.0, 3.2, 10.24, 32.7 and 104.8 mg/L were tested.

The ErC10(72h) was calculated as 1.75 mg/L (Growth Rate) and the ErC50(72h) was calculated as 9.39 mg/L (Growth rate), based on geometric measure mean values. The NOEC was calculated as 1.05 mg/L and the LOEC as 2.91 mg/L. (Growth rate) [Geometric measure mean values].

Expressed as nominal values, this would compare to an ErC50 of 70.2 mg/L and the ErC10 would be 6.6 mg/L, however due to the photo- instability and the coloration of the test solutions due to the test substance, it is difficult to conclude on actual concentrations.

Toxicity to microorganisms

The toxicity to activated sludge was determined in accordance with OECD Test Guideline 209, and in compliance with the OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practice. The EC50of DTPA-FeHNa for activated sludge after 3 hours contact time was >1280 mg/L. DTPA-FeHNa is therefore considered not harmful to activated sludge.
