Description of key information

A 72-hour EC50 of >0.98 mg/L (based on growth rate) was obtained in an experiment for aquatic toxicity in microalga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. A test on the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna was also undertaken that determined the 48-hour EC50 to be 17 mg/L. The threshold for classification as Aquatic Acute 1; H400 is 1 mg/L. The test results suggest that the Reaction products of stearic acid, diethylenetriamine and N-aminoethylethanolamine and acetic acid is non-acutely toxic to the aquatic environment in accordance with CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, Annex I, Table 4.1.0 (a).

For substances with no adequate chronic toxicity data and are non-rapidly degradable, the EC50 may be used to classify for long-term aquatic hazard. The 72 -hour EC50 (algae) of >0.98 mg/L gives a classification of Category Chronic 2 (> 1 to ≤10 mg/L) whereas the 48-hour EC50 (crustacea) of 17 mg/L gives a less severe classification of Category Chronic 3 (> 10 to ≤100 mg/L) in accordance with CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, Annex I, Table 4.1.0 (b)(iii).
