Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The results of the study indicate that less than 10% of tetrahydrothiophene was biodegraded in 28 days. The toxicity control showed that tetrahydrothiophene is not inhibitory to micro-organisms. The sterile control showed that tetrahydrothiophene is not degraded abiotically.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

Thiebaud (1998) is a GLP compliant, 28-day, aerobic test on secondary effluent, following OECD guideline 301F. The study can be considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint. The results indicate that tetrahydrothiophene is not readily biodegradable and may therefore be persistent in the environment. This is supported by a QSAR calculation, which predicts that tetrahydrothiophene is not expected to biodegrade.
