Description of key information

The influence of the test substance on the growth of the freshwater algae Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus) was assessed in a static dose response test according to DIN 38 412. Based on act. ingr. the 72h-ErC50 value was calculated to be 196.88 mg/L (extrapolated), and the associated 72h-ErC10 was determined to be 56.77 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
196.88 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
56.77 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of the test substance was determined according to the principles of DIN 38412 Part L9. The aim of the study was to assess the effects on growth rate and yield over a period of 72 and 96 hours. The study was conducted under static conditions. This study encompassed 6 treatment groups (5 dose rates of the test item and control) with one replicate per test concentration and one replicate for the control. At test start 50 mL of the test concentrations were inoculated with 10000 algal cells per mL test medium and defined volumes of the algal suspensions were sampled after 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours for determination of cell densities by spectrophotometrical measurement. No analytical determination of the concentrations of the test substance was done. The nominal test concentrations were 0.5, 5, 50 and 500 mg test item/L.

Based on act. ingr., the 72h-ErC50 was determined to be 196.88 mg test item/L and the associated 72h-ErC10 was determined to be 56.77 mg test item/L. The 72h-EyC10 was determined to be 50.92 mg/L and the 72h-EyC50 was determined to be 170.92 mg/L

Also based on act. ingr., the 96h-ErC50 was determined to be 272.34 mg/L and the associated 96h-ErC10 was determined to be 3.89 mg/L. The associated 96h-EyC10 was determined to be 35.06 mg/L and the associated 96h-EyC50 was determined to be 103.76 mg/L. All values were based on nominal concentrations.
