Description of key information

In their review (EU Risk Assessment, 2000), the EU Competent Authority concluded that acetonitrile should be considered as ready biodegradable for local scenarios if WWTP is available.

New information (Brixham, 2010; CITI of Japan, 1998) obtained since the time of the EU RAR confirm that acetonitrile is readily biodegradable by non-acclimated organisms. In both cases pass levels were succesfully reached within the relevant test/time window period confirming the readily biodegradable nature of acetonitrile.

With such a classification acetonitrile is expected to be quickly degraded in the environment with removal in soil expected to be efficient and rapid. It is also expected that removal by sewage sludge would be significant if any emissions to the STP were made.

Aerobic biodegradation is expected to be the major loss process in soil and water; volatilization may become competitive in shallow water.
