Description of key information

Silver nitrate is an inorganic substance that forms an ion crystal lattice, which contains silver cations and nitrate anions, with a melting point of 212°C. It is scientifically not plausible that silver nitrate could exist in molecular form in the gas phase due to its ionic character. Thus, the concept of vapour pressure, i.e. the saturation pressure above a solid or liquid does not apply. Furthermore, silver nitrate decomposes in the temperature range 250-440°C. Silver nitrate is readily soluble in water, in which it dissolves into ions, which cannot evaporate. In consequence, the testing for vapour pressure is waived for silver nitrate, since such testing would not provide any meaningful information on the substance, nor information applicable to the assessment of environmental fate or for any further animal or environmental studies.
