Additional information

Silicon nitride was found to have no toxic effects in any of the aquatic species tested (no mortality or sub-lethal effects seen in fish, no immobilisation of daphnia was observed, and there was no inhibition of the growth of algae); in addition, no inhibition of microorganisms was seen in an ASRIT. When this extremely low toxicity profile is considered alongside the very low water solubility and low potential to bioaccumulate, it may be concluded that Silicon Nitride presents no significant hazard for the aquatic environment.

On the basis of low toxicity (no identified toxicity) in aquatic species, and the low (no) toxicity seen in mammals (please refer also to dossier section 7), no toxicity in terrestrial organisms is anticipated.

Conclusion on classification

None of the available aquatic toxicity tests (acute testing in three trophic levels) identified any hazard to the aquatic environment. On this basis it is concluded that Silicon Nitride is not classified as Hazardous to the Environment within the meaning of either the CLP Regulation, nor the Dangerous Substances Directive.
