Since no studies investigating the short-term toxicity to fish of fatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18-unsatd., mixed esters with castor oil, castor oil Fatty acids, 2-ethylhexanoic acid and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1-butanol (CAS No. 92113-48-9) are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally similar analogue substance Fatty acids, C14 -18 and C18 -unsatd., branched and linear, esters with trimethylolpropane (CAS No. 85005-23-8) was conducted.This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID chapter 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13. The read across is justified based on common breakdown products, similar physico-chemical properties, environmental fate, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties.

The acute toxicity on fish was investigated in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 203 and EU Method C.1, with the carp Cyprinus carpio as test organism (Bogers, 1997). The test was conducted as limit test with a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L. Based on the low water solubility of the test item the stock solution was prepared with acetone as solubiliser. The test substance induced no lethal or other visible effects in carp at the concentration of 100 mg/L (nominal). Hence it can be concluded that the substance causes no acute toxic effects in fish within the range of water solubility.
