Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short-term EC50 and NOEC values for Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts (CAS no. 70983-43-6) are available for two trophic levels of the aquatic freshwater compartment (aquatic invertebrates, algae) from GLP studies according to OECD 201 and 202.

Growth inhibition study aquatic algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) (OECD 201):

ErC50(72h): 60.7 mg/l nominal concentration

NOErC (72 h): 1 mg/l nominal concentration.

Short term toxicity on invertebrates (Daphnia magna) (OECD 202):

EC50 (48h): 84.2 mg/l measured concentration.

NOEC (48h): 29.1 mg/l measured concentration

Additional information

Algae:

The acute toxicity of Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts (CAS no. 70983-43-6) to the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined in a 72 hour static test according to OECD guideline 201. The median effect concentrations (ECr50) of the test item on the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was calculated to be 60.7 mg/l nominal concentration after 72 h of exposure. The NOErC values were calculated to be 1 mg/l nominal concentration after 72 h of exposure. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restriction.

Daphnia:

The acute toxicity of Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts (CAS no. 70983-43-6) to Daphnia magna was determined in a 48 hour static test according to OECD guideline 202. The median effect concentrations (EC50) of the test item on Daphnia magna were calculated to be 160 mg/l and 84.2 mg/l measured concentration after 24 and 48 h of exposure, respectively. The NOEC values were calculated to be 58.7 mg/l and 29.1 mg/l measured concentration after 24 and 48 h of exposure, respectively. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restriction.

Conclusion on classification

The environmental classification of Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts (CAS no. 70983-43-6) is currently not harmonised according to the CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. Based on available acute aquatic toxicity data, the lowest valid effect concentration for freshwater aquatic organisms is 60.7 mg/L (EC50 for algae). Based on the available acute data, the substance should not be classified for acute toxicity following Annex I, table 4.1.0a of the CLP regulation (there are no acute values <=1 mg/L).
