Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

SMBT is an organic salt of strong base NaOH and weak acid of MBT; and hence its aqueous solution has a basic character. The marketed aqueous solutions of SMBT have normally a w/w concentration of 30% to 50% with a pH of ca. 10. The ionisation state depends upon pH and the pKa of the weak acid MBT, which has been experimentally determined to be 7.03 at 20 +/-1°C (CMA, 1989). Under environmentally relevant pHs (4 -9), the higher is the pH and the higher is the percentage of undissociated MBT.
