A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained from a petroleum stock by treating with hydrogen to convert organic sulfur to hydrogen sulfide which is removed. It consists predominantly of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C13 through C25 and boiling in the range of approximately 230°C to 400°C (446°F to 752°F).
toxicity was estimated using the PETROTOX computer model, which combines
a partitioning model (used to calculate the aqueous concentration of
hydrocarbon components as a function of substance loading) with the
Target Lipid Model (used to calculate acute and chronic toxicity of
non-polar narcotic chemicals). PETROTOX computes toxicity based on the
summation of the aqueous-phase concentrations of hydrocarbon block(s)
that represent a petroleum substance and membrane-water partition
coefficients (KMW) that describe the partitioning of the
hydrocarbons between the water and organism. The estimated 40-hr EL50
value forTetrahymena pyriformis, one of the most sensitive
microorganism species, is >1000 mg/L
and the estimated NOEL is 2.492 mg/L.
