Toxicity to soil macroorganisms

Eisenia fetida was used as representative for soil macroorganisms in an experiment conducted according to OECD Guideline 203 / EU Method C.1. Only a slight deviation from the test guideline was reported: the temperature range was shifted for 1 °C upwards, which has no influence upon the outcome of the experiment. Fe(III)HBED was tested at five concentrations with a spacing factor of 1.8 (100, 180, 320, 560 and 1000 mg/kg d.w.). The following results were obtained after 14 days: LC0: 1000 mg/kg d.w., LC50 and LC100 > 1000 mg/kg d.w..

Based on these findings (and further obtained results for the terrestrial compartment), the chemical safety assessment concluded, that no toxicity investigation on terrestrial arthropods has to be conducted. This procedure is in accordance to REACH, Annex IX, Section 9.4, column 2.

Toxicity to terrestrial plants

Soybean (Glycine max L. cv Stine 0480) plants were used in a growth chamber experiment to investigate the efficacy to supply iron (Fe) to plants with different chelates, i.e. HBED/57Fe3+ (Lucena, Hernández and Nadal, 2008). The following conclusions were obtained: HBED/Fe3+ is a good chelate to correct Fe chlorosis. In comparison to another chelate, EDDHA/Fe3 +, the following findings are reported: EDDHA/FE3+ present a faster action than HBED/Fe3+. HBED/Fe3+ presents more long lasting effect than EDDHA/Fe3+.

Furthermore, an expert statement is available (Lucena, 2012), which supports the positive findings for plants of the test substance.

In general, the test substance is used as iron fertilizer and based on its intrinsic substance properties and in accordance to REACH, Annex IX, Section 9.4, column 2, no further investigations for toxicity in terrestrial plants is intended.

Toxicity to soil microorganisms

Two assays were conducted to investigate the toxicity of Fe(Na)HBED towards soil microorganisms: nitrogen transformation (OECD 216 / EU C.21) (Swoboda, 2008) and carbon transformation (OECD 217 / EU C.22) (Swoboda, 2008). Both experiments were performed without deviations from the corresponding guideline, respectively.

Concerning OECD 216, the following results were obtained: EC25(28d) > 1000 mg/kg, EC50(28d) > 1000 mg/kg. The EC10(28d) could not be evaluated based on the obtained results.

In the carbon transformation assay similar results were reported, including 95 % CL in brackets: EC10(28d): 29.94 (0.83 - 83.65) mg/kg soil, EC20(28d): 264 (102.98 - 616.35) mg/kg soil and EC50(28d) > 1000 mg/kg soil.

Toxicity to birds and other above-ground organisms

No data available. However, this information is not required for a substance registration under REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 in a tonnage band of 100 - 1000 tones.
