The long-term toxicity of 4-Nitrophenol to fish species has been extensively reviewed by international groups of experts, i.e. BUA report No.75 (1992), IPCS CICAD (2000), ECB IUCLID (2000) and the US EPA under the HPV Chemicals Challenge Program (2004). In a long-term exposure of a marine fish species (sheepshead minnow, Cyprinodon variegatus) from the egg-stage to 28 days after hatching, 16 mg 4 -Nitrophenol/L in the flow-through system resulted in a reduction in the hatching rate to 2 % ( control 89%) and led to the death of all hatched young. No effects could be determined below 16 mg/L (Ward et al. 1981, cited from the BUA report 1992). After prolonged exposure of zebra fish to 4 -Nitrophenol, minor morphological iterations of the liver, even at a concentration of 0.1 mg/L, were observed. At 1 and 5 mg/L, about 25% of animals showed symptoms of degenerative transformation of the liver tissue into large , polynuclear cell masses (Braunbeck et al. 1989, cited from IPCS CICAD 2000).
