Additional information

No studies investigating the toxicity of Reaction products of oleoyl sarcosine with sodium hydroxide to microorganisms are available. Therefore, data from the corresponding acid, (Z)-N-methyl-N-(1-oxo-9-octadecenyl) glycine (CAS 110-25-8), are used as read-across.

This read across approach is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Grouping of substance and read across approach as is explained within the category justification in IUCLID Section 13. Except for different cations (hydrogen vs. sodium) the anions of both the source and target substance have similar chemical structures. Since dissociation of the sodium salt under environmental conditions (pH 4 - 9) yields the same ionic species as dissociation of the acidic form of the substance, this read across can be considered as justified.

For the toxicity of the read-across substance (Z)-N-methyl-N-(1-oxo-9-octadecenyl) glycine (CAS 110-25-8) to microorganisms two studies according to OECD 209 are available. The key study was carried out under GLP-conditions with domestic activated sludge as inoculum (Muckle, 2009). Effects on the respiration rate of the microorganisms were observed at concentrations far beyond the water solubility and the measured data showed a large variety, with 95% confidence levels for the EC50 (3 h) between 480 mg/L and 7200 mg/L. The EC50 (3 h) was extrapolated to be 1300 mg/L. For PNEC derivation the NOEC (3 h) of 10 mg/L was used. The supporting study did not follow GLP standards (Bader, 1989). In this study, the IC50 (3 h) for respiration inhibition was above the highest test concentration of 100 mg/L.

Based on the available result from one structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5.) which is characterized by a comparable structure, it can be concluded that Reaction products of oleoyl sarcosine with sodium hydroxide will show similar results.
