Additional information

No studies investigating the toxicity of Reaction products of oleoyl sarcosine with sodium hydroxide to algae are available. Therefore, data from the corresponding acid, (Z)-N-methyl-N-(1-oxo-9-octadecenyl) glycine (CAS 110-25-8), are used as read-across. This read-across approach is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Grouping of substance and read across approach as is explained within the category justification in IUCLID section 13. Except for different cations (hydrogen vs. sodium) the anions of both the source and target substance have similar chemical structures. Since dissociation of the sodium salt under environmental conditions (pH 4 - 9) yields the same ionic species as dissociation of the acidic form of the substance, this read across can be considered as justified.

The toxicity of the read-across substance (Z)-N-methyl-N-(1-oxo-9-octadecenyl) glycine (CAS 110-25-8) to aquatic algae was investigated in two tests with the green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus according to OECD 201. The key study (Muckle, 2010) was carried out under GLP conditions including analytics (HPLC-MS). Based on growth rate, an ErC50 (72 h) of 6.3 mg/L is reported. Based on yield, an EyC50 (72 h) of 2.7 mg/L was determined. For both parameters, the NOEC (72 h) was 0.91 mg/L. Based on biomass, the reported values are EbC50 (72 h) of 2.7 mg/L and a NOEC (72 h) of 0.53 mg/L. All effect concentrations are based on the initial measured concentration. The supporting study conducted with the same substance (BASF, 1990), was carried out according to OECD 201 (non-GLP) without analytics, and reported an EbC20 (72 h) of 1.57 mg/L and an EbC50 (72 h) of 5.1 mg/L, based on biomass. Effects on growth of algae are not reported.

Based on the available results from one structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5.) which is characterized by a comparable structure, it can be concluded that Reaction products of oleoyl sarcosine with sodium hydroxide will show similar results.
