The 72 hour EC50 of Lakeland ACP 70 to
Chlorella vulgaris was estimated as 0.48 mg/L using the biomass integral
and 0.63 mg/L by growth rate calculation. The 48 hour EC50 was 0.33 mg/L
by biomass integral and 0.48 by growth rate. The values obtained
indicate that at 72 hours there was no inhibition of algal growth or
growth rate up to 0.25 mg/L. Inhibition calculated using both the
biomass integral and the growth rate was significant at 48 hours at the
lowest test concentration of 0.05 mg/I. The growth curves in Graph 1
show that at a concentration of 0.5 mg/L Lakeland ACP 70 growth was
delayed, but a level of 1.0 mg/L almost completely stopped growth of the
algae. The cell density of the control during the 72 hour test period
increased by a factor of over 200, which is satisfactory.
A sample of LAKELAND ACP 70 was assessed
for its potential toxicity to the freshwater alga Pseudokirschnereilla
subcapitata in a static test over 72 hours according to the procedure
described in OECD Guideline 201 Alga, Growth Inhibition Test and as
detailed in STL Runcorn SOP 111.3. Water Accommodated Fractions (WAFs)
containing concentrations of LAKELAND ACP 70, were prepared over the
range 1.78 to 17.8 mg ri. Cultures of Pseudokirschnereilla subcapitata
were exposed to determine the concentration which inhibited algal growth
rate by 50% over 72 hours (ECSO). Results were reported as EC50 (24 h)
1.01 mg/L, EC50 (48 h) 1.51 mg/L and EC50 (72 h) 1.91 mg/L. The NOEC (72
h) value was reported as < 1.78 mg/L.
A sample of ACP 70 was assessed for its
potential toxicity to the marine alga Skeletonema costatum in a static
test over 72 hours. Nominal test concentrations of ACP 70, were prepared
over the range 0.1 to 1.0 mg/L. Cultures of Skeletonema costatum were
exposed to determine the concentration which inhibited algal growth rate
by 50 % over 72 hours (EC50). Results were reported as EC50 (24 h) 0.38
mg/L, EC50 (48 h) 0.38 mg/L and EC50 (72 h) 0.40 mg/L). The NOEC value
was reported as 0.1 mg/L.

are available for freshwater and marine algae.
