Description of key information

Additional information

Appearance:

Based on available data from various reliable sources such as authoritative database and review article ,the chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was colorless to yellow liquid in appearance having pungent odour.

Other supporting studies from various reliable sources such authoritative database and handbooks also suggests that the chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was colorless to pale yellow colored liquid in appearance.

Freezing point:

Based on available data from various reliable sources such as authoritative database and handbooks, the freezing point of chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was determined to be 18.3 degree C.

Other suppoting study from reliable handbook and authoritative database suggests that the freezing point of chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was reported to be in the range of 7.2 degree C to 20 degree C and the seclected key study value lies between the range as mentioned above.

Boiling point:

Based on available data from various reliable sources such as authoritative database and handbook the boiling point of chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was determined to be in the range of 129 degree C to 133 degree C at 18 mm Hg pressure.

Other supporting study from authoritative database also suggests that the boiling point of chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was reported to be 130 degree C,which lies the range of selected key study.

Density:

Based on available data from authoritative database and review article ,the density of chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was determined to be 1.226 g/cm3 at 20 degree C.

Other supporting studies from authoritative database and review articles also suggests that the density and relative density of chemical 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was reported to be 1.225 g/cm3 and 1.22 (water=1) respectively.

Particle Size Distribution:

In accordance with REACH Chapter R.7A Endpoint Specific Guidance, specifically R.7.1.14.1 Information requirements on granulometry, the granulometry study does not need to be conducted as the test substance, 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form. The test substance, 2,6- Toluene diisocyanate is a colorless to yellow liquid at room temperature and as such this study is not technically feasible.Hence this endpoint was considered for waiver.

Vapour Pressure:

Data from various authoritative databases suggests that the experimental vapour pressure of 2,6- Toluene diisocyanate at 25 deg C was 0.0209 mmHg = 2.78 Pa.

Partition coefficient:

Data from authoritative and modelling databases suggests that the estimated logPow of 2,6- Toluene diisocyanate was 3.74

Water Solubility:

In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex VII, information requirement section 7.7, this study is not needed since the substance is (hydrolytically unstable at pH 4, 7 and 9 (t ½ <12 hr). The test substance; 2,6 -Toluenediisocyanate undergoes rapid hydrolysis in contact with water with a half life of less than 10 minutes.Hence this study is technically not feasible, therefore the endpoint can be considered for waiver.

Surface tension:

In accordance with Column 2 of Annex VII Section 7.6 of the REACH regulation, Testing may not be possible for reactive substances which react with water, as 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate (91-08-7) was reacts readily with water. Hence this study was considered for waiver.

Flash point:

As per the available data for flash point from authoritative database (Pubchem, CHRIP, Gestis,NIOSH,etc) the flash point value determined was in range from 110 degree C to 127 degree C. As more data available from databases which has K2 reliability having value as 127 °C thus considered as key study for the chemical safety assessment. Also based on criteria mentioned in CLP regulation the chemical has flash point >than 60 degree C hence the 2, 6-Toluene diisocyanate (91-08-7) was considered to be non-flammable.

Autoflammability:

From the available authoritative databases, the auto- ignition temperature of 2, 6-Toluene diisocyanate (91-08-7) was determined to be 620 degree C.

Flammability:

A study was performed to determine the flammable limits of 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate.

The lower explosion limits for 2,6-Toluene diisocyanate was 9.0 vol%.

Explosiveness:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study does not need to be conducted since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of 2,6- Toluene diisocyanate. Thus, the chemical is likely to be "Non explosive". Hence this end point was considered for waiver.

Oxidising Properties:

This study was not conducted since the chemical N-mrthylformanilide is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials. Based on the chemical structure of 2,6- Toluene diisocyanate, the chemical contains oxygen but no halogen atoms and the oxygen is not chemically bonded to nitrogen. Thus, 2,6 - Toluene diisocyanate is not expected to have oxidising properties.
