Hydrolysis

The Hydrolysis rate constant of tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol was estimated to be 0.0000000000360558 (36.0558 E-12 ) cm3/molecule-sec.at half life of the 3.56 Hrs. The estimated half life of the substance indicates that the substance is moderately hydrolysable.

 

Biodegradation in water:

According to EPI (Estimation Programs Interface) Suite by means of BIOWIN Linear and Nonlinear method it is indicated that tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol is a readily biodegradable substance and degrades fast. Also it was estimated that the half of tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol is 900 hous (37.5 days) which is less than the EPI criteria for persistence (les than 60 days). Therefore it can be estimated that tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol is not persistent in water medium.

 

Biodegradation in water and sediment:

Based on the Level III Fugacity Model, the half life period of thetert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol was estimated to be 900 hrs (37.5 days) in water and 337.5 days in sediment respectively. Therefore it is considered that the substance will qualify as not persistent in water medium as the half life does not exceed the EPA criteria of 60 days. However, it can be observed that tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol was seem to be persistent in sediment medium but can be ignored the sediment persistence as it does not diffuse in the sediment medium and it's percentage diffusion in the sediment medium is reported to be much lower as 0.854 %.

 

Biodegradation in soil:

The EPI Suite has estimated that tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol is expected to be found predominantly in soil and its persistence estimate is based on its availability in this medium. Half-life of tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol in soil was estimated to be 1800 hrs. which exceeds the EPA criteria of >= 2 months (and <= 6 months). Therefore, tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol is estimated to be persistent in the soil environment.

 

Bioaccumulation

Bioaccumulation is the process by which the chemical concentration in an aquatic organism achieves a level that exceeds that in the water, as a result of chemical uptake through all possible routes of exposure. The relationship between bioaccumulation and bio-concentration is that, chemicals that have the potential to bioconcentrate also have the potential to bioaccumulate. Bioaccumulation is closely related to the Bioconcentration factor (BCF).

 

The estimated bioconcentration factor (BCF) for tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol is 57.07, does not exceed the bioconcentration threshold of 1000. Thus it is concluded that tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol is not expected to bioaccumulate in the food chain.

 

Adsorption / desorption

Soil Adsorption Coefficient i.e Koc value of tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol was estimated as 840.7 L/kg by means of MCI method. This indicates that tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol will adsorb to the organic carbon fraction of the soil and will have a slight tendency to move with the water content in the soil.This value of 840.7 when converted at 20°C works out to be 672.56.

Henry's Law constant

Henry's Law states that at a constant temperature, the amount of a given gas that dissolves in a given type and volume of liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas in equilibrium with that liquid. Henrys Law Constant of tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol which is a solid at 25 deg C is 0.00868 Pa m³/mol.
