Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The substance is non-flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The test substance pile could be ignited. It burned with a blue flame and melted. After removal of the ignition source, no propagation of combustion was observed. The flame extinguished after 35 seconds. The flammability was determined by EU Method A.10 (NOTOX B.V., 2007).

In an additional study, on application of the ignition source, the test substance melted and burned very slowly with a small blue flame. After 4 minutes, the substance had only propagated combustion 40 mm along the train. The test was terminated and the full burning time over 200 mm was not determined. The flammability was determined by EU Method A.10 (Syngenta Technology and Projects, 2004a).

In another additional study, The test article, a yellow powder, did not ignite, but initially the solid sample melted when the Bunsen burner flame came close. The propagation of combustion on the melted test article was noted, without flame, in 8'49''. Since the combustion of the test article occurred in a time greater than 4 minutes, no further testing was required (ChemService S.r.l. Testing Laboratory, 2005d).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the combustion propagation of less than 200 mm in 4 minutes, classification of sulfur as flammable is not warranted in accordance with the EU CLP Regulation (EC No. 1272/2008).
