Guidance on Safe Use

First-aid measures

INHALATION:

- In case of accident by inhalation: remove casualty to fresh air and keep at rest.

- Victim to lie down in the recovery position, cover and keep him warm.

- If breathing is difficult, give oxygen or artificial respiration.

- If symptoms persist, call a physician.

EYE CONTACT:

- Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.

- In the case of dificulty of opening the lids, administer an analgesic eye wash (oxybuprocaine).

- Immediate medical attention is required.

SKIN CONTACT:

- Remove and wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

- Wash off with soap and water.

- Dispose of all contaminated leather articles such as gloves and shoes.

INGESTION:

- Consult a physician immediately.

- Take victim immediately to hospital.

- If swallowed, rinse mouth with water ( only if the person is conscious).

- Do NOT induce vomiting.

- Do not give anything to drink.

- Artificial respiration and/or oxygen may be necessary.

- If symptoms persist, call a physician.

Fire-fighting measures

SUITABLE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:

- Use extinguishing measures that are appropriate to local circumstances and the surrounding environment.

- Can be extinguished with water, powder, foam, sand or carbon dioxide.

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA WHICH SHALL NOT BE USED FOR SAFETY REASONS:

- None.

SPECIAL EXPOSURE HAZARDS IN A FIRE:

- The product is not flammable.

- Hazardous decomposition products formed under fire conditions.

- May form very toxic or corrosive vapor when heated.

SPECIAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR FIRE-FIGHTERS:

- Evacuate personnel to safe areas.

- Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit.

- Fire fighters must wear fire resistant personnel protective equipment.

- Clean contaminated surface thoroughly.

SPECIAL FIREFIGHTING PROCEDURES/PRECAUTIONS:

- Move containers from fire area.

- Cool containers/tanks with spray water.

- Flood the product with water.

Accidental release measures

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS:

- Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so.

- Vapours are heavier than air and can cause suffocation by reducing oxygen available for breathing.

- wear self-contained breathing apparatus in cinfined spaces, in cases where the oxygen level is depleted, or in case of significant emissions.

- Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition.

- Cover the spreading liquid with foam in order to slow down the evaporation.

- Keep away from incompatible products.

- ventilate the area.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS:

- Should not be released into the environment.

- If the product contaminates rivers and lakes or drains inform respective authorities.

METHODS FOR CLEANING UP:

- Dam up.

- Soak up with inert absorbent material.

- Prevent product from entering drains.

- Keep in properly labelled containers.

- Keep in suitable, closed containers for disposal.

Handling and storage

HANDLING:

- Used in closed system.

- Handle small quantities under a lab hood.

- Keep away from heat and sources of ignition.

- Prevent product vapours decomposition from contacting hot spots.

- Preferably transfer by pump or gravity.

- The incinerator must be equipped with a system for the neutralisation or recovery of HCl.

- To avoid treatments, as far as possible, use dedicated containers, or

- Rinse the empty containers with a low volatility hydrocarbon and treat the effluent in the same way as waste.
