Additional information

Retinyl palmitate showed no acute toxicity to all three trophic levels. In addition, no toxicity of retinyl palmitate was found to microorganisms. However, the acute toxicity to fish and daphnids was tested using the close structural analogues retinyl propionate (CAS# 7069-42 -3) and retinol (CAS# 68-26-8), respectively. None of the substances exhibit acute toxic effects to aquatic organisms. Therefore, an acute toxicity of retinyl palmitate is unlikely. Moreover, the test substance is highly insoluble in water.

Despite a high log Pow (calculated value of 14.6), retinyl palmitate can not be assessed as bioaccumulative since the substance is degraded in organisms by esterases into the naturally occurring degradation products retinol and palmitic acid. In addition, short term toxicity tests showed no evidence for acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Therefore, and for animal welfare reasons, long-term toxicity studies in aquatic organisms are not provided.
