Description of key information

Carbazole caused neoplastic lesions in the livers of B6C3F1 mice under test conditions. Tumors were also noticed in the forestomach but at lower incidence and  prevalently at the higher doses. A clear dose dependence of tumor incidence could not be observed.

Overall evaluation of IARC 1999, Vol 71, p. 1319:

Carbazole is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans (Group 3).

No epidemiological data relevant to the carcinogenicity of carbazole were available.

There is limited evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of carbazole.
