Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.17 (Oxidising Properties (Solids))
Version / remarks:
Directive 79/831/EEC
Principles of method if other than guideline:
A reduced testing programme was employed because the slow burning rate of the test substance mixtures, relative to that of the reference mixture, adequately demonstrates that the test substance is attenuating the burning properties of cellulose and not enhancing them.
GLP compliance:
yes

Any other information on results incl. tables

The following test results were observed:

10% Test Substance:

In each of six tests, the sample ignited and combustion propagated fully with flame.

Burning Times:   1. 121s, 2. 118s, 3. 128s,4. 111s. 5. 122s, 6. 127s.

Maximum Burning Rate = 1.80 mm/s.

30% Test Substance:

In each of two tests the sample ignited and burned with a weak flame, which self-extinguished before reaching the first timing mark. No burning times could be recorded.

60% Test Substance:

In each of two tests the sample ignited and burned locally for < 2s before self-extinguishing. It did not propagate combustion beyond the first timing mark and no burning times could be recorded.

80% Test Substance:

In each of two tests the sample ignited and burned locally for < 1s before self-extinguishing. It did not propagate combustion beyond the first timing mark and no burning times could be recorded.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
other: no oxidising properties
Remarks:
Migrated information
Conclusions:
Maximum burning rates:
Test substance mixture = 1.80 mm/s
Reference mixture = 3.77 mm/s
Cellulose alone = 2.08 mm/s

Mixture concentrations for maximum burning rates:
10% test substance / cellulose.
60% barium nitrate / cellulose.

A reduced testing programme was employed because the results adequately demonstrate that the test substance attenuated the burning of the cellulose, rather than enhanced it.
Executive summary:

The substance is not considered to be oxidising.

A reduced testing programme was employed because the results adequately demonstrate that the test substance attenuated the burning of the cellulose, rather than enhanced it.
