Remarks:
corresponding to 'yes' in migrated source record.

Rate of evolution of gas:

Test 1: 295 l/kg.min

Test 2: 305 l/kg.min

Test 3: 356 l/kg.min

The whole gas volume (62 ml - 67 ml) was generated during the first minute of each test respectively.

Based on the formula of oxalylchloride and water the compsition of the generated gas is

C2Cl2O2 + H2O -> CO + CO2 + 2 HCl

The likelihood of being flammable is very high. Based on the test results oxalyl dichloride fulfills the criteria of classification of dangerous goods of class 4.3 package group I.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The substance is considered to be hazardous because there is evolution of flammable gas at a rate greater than 1L/kg of the substance per hour. (EC A.12) The substance is therefore classified in category 1- H260.
Executive summary:

The test was performed to determine whether the reaction of the substance with water leads to the development of dangerous amounts of gases which may be highly flammable. The test was performed according to Un N.5 that is equivalent to EC A.12. The main test leads to a maximal rate of gas evolution of 356 L/kg.min. All the gas was produced within the first minute. The generated gas (CO + CO2 + 2HCl) is considered to be flammable in a mixture with air.

Based on the gas evolution of 356 L/kg.min the substance oxalyl dichloride has to be classified in category 1 - H260: In contact with water releases flammable gases which may ignite spontaneously.
